Organiser: Number Champions
When
Project availability
from 1 January 2025 to 26 July 2026
What
School selects children who are behind in maths and could benefit from personal support.
Trained volunteers use games and other creative activities in one-to-one session to help the child acquire interest, confidence, and skills in the subject.
- School selects children who could benefit from support in maths
- Number Champions trains volunteers to tailor one-to-one sessions to the needs of a particular child and to help them overcome "the maths barrier"
- Sessions are weekly, in school time, outside the classroom, for the whole school year
- Admin is minimised for the school, but we do need (a) in September, basic information on the child's needs (b) in July, the teacher's evaluation of progress over the year
- Our volunteer "one to one" model is based on the many successful reading programmes; we are the only charity using this approach systematically for numeracy
- We have experienced teachers also volunteering with us who train our "In-School Volunteers" and give them individual support during the year
- We supply our volunteers with a kit of manipulatives and with extensive support material on our website (some of which is of use to parents to help their children)
- We work with Years 2 and 3 as educational research (supported by the views of most teachers) shows that early intervention is most effective
- We can show strong positive evaluations by teachers year by year
- Space for the volunteer sessions
